Legal Desk AI vs LawRato

About LawRato: An Indian online marketplace where clients find and consult lawyers across more than a thousand cities.

TL;DR

LawRato is a marketplace where clients in India find, consult and hire lawyers. Legal Desk AI is software lawyers use to do the legal work itself. The two products started near the same question — how do you help clients find a good lawyer in a market where direct advertising is restricted and reliable ratings are scarce — and took different paths. LawRato built the marketplace and runs it well. Legal Desk AI built the working surface, includes a free public profile with every account, and intends to add a discovery layer once the registered-lawyer base supports it. Most working lawyers will benefit from both.

Where LawRato wins

Areas where LawRato is genuinely the stronger pick.

  • Inbound client channel, run end-to-end

LawRato connects you with paying clients searching for representation, and handles intake, scheduling and consumer-facing flow. Legal Desk AI does not currently do client acquisition — that is not the category.

  • Marketplace reach across India

LawRato's public materials describe a verified directory of thousands of lawyers across many Indian cities, with consultation requests routed by practice area and location.

  • Lower-friction entry for clients

Free first questions and short phone or video consultations make it easy for prospects to engage before committing to a full retainer — a flow LawRato has shaped over more than a decade.

  • Established consumer brand

LawRato has been operating as a consumer-facing legal platform since 2013 and is widely recognised among Indian clients searching for a lawyer.

Where Legal Desk AI wins

Where our approach pulls ahead for everyday legal work.

  • Different category — workbench, not marketplace

Legal Desk AI is the software for doing the legal work after a client engages. It does not compete with LawRato for intake; it lives at a different point in the lawyer's day.

  • Free public profile for every lawyer

Every Legal Desk AI account — paid or free — comes with a public lawyer profile page. It is included, not an upsell, and stays available regardless of plan.

  • AI workflow built for Indian legal work

Maya AI drafts replies, analyses cases, suggests sections, summarises judgments and translates across Indian languages. None of this is part of a marketplace product.

  • Private per-lawyer database

A lawyer's case work, documents, drafts and AI history live in a database isolated to that account. Matters do not pass through a public-facing platform.

  • Discovery is on the roadmap, when the base supports it

The discovery problem — helping clients find good lawyers in a market with limited advertising and limited ratings — is part of the original motivation behind Legal Desk AI. Once the registered-lawyer base is large enough to make a search experience genuinely useful, a discovery layer will be added on top of the existing free profiles.

Two products, one starting question

How does a client in India find a good lawyer? The question sounds simple. In practice, it is hard. Direct legal advertising is restricted by Bar Council rules. Public ratings of lawyers, in any reliable form, do not really exist. Recommendations move through hearsay and personal networks. A new client, in a new city, with a new legal problem, starts from very little.

That problem shaped LawRato, which began in 2013 and built a consumer marketplace around it. The same problem also shaped early thinking at Legal Desk AI — the name itself reflects an interest in being the place a lawyer's work lives, including the part of the work that touches discovery. The two products diverged in approach. LawRato built the marketplace. Legal Desk AI built the working surface.

The result is two genuinely different products that share a piece of motivation.

What LawRato does

LawRato is a two-sided marketplace. On one side, individuals and businesses search for legal help by practice area and city. On the other side, lawyers list themselves, respond to enquiries and take paid consultations by phone, video, email or in person. The platform handles intake, scheduling and the consumer-facing experience.

For a lawyer building a book of business, LawRato is a channel. It can produce inbound consultations that turn into clients.

What Legal Desk AI does

Legal Desk AI is the software a lawyer uses after a client engages — and for the cases they already have. Maya AI helps with drafting, analysing case material, summarising judgments, suggesting relevant sections, and converting between Indian languages. Nyaya gives offline access to Indian court judgments. Case and client tracking sit alongside the AI tools, in a database scoped to the individual lawyer.

Alongside that, every account — paid or free — comes with a public lawyer profile page. The profile is included, not a paywalled feature. It exists so that when search and discovery do become part of the product, there is already a profile to surface.

The discovery question, looking forward

Discovery — letting a client find a lawyer by area, practice and reputation — is on the Legal Desk AI roadmap, but only when the registered-lawyer base is large enough for the experience to be genuinely useful. Launching search across a small directory would be honest but unhelpful; launching it across a meaningful directory of practising Indian lawyers is the bar we are working towards. Until then, profiles are kept up to date and discoverable individually.

This is a different shape from LawRato's approach. LawRato's marketplace prioritises liquidity now, with intake and consultation flow built in. Legal Desk AI's path prioritises the workbench first, the profile alongside, and discovery when the time is right.

How they fit together

Most working lawyers in India will use channels like LawRato for client acquisition and software like Legal Desk AI for the work itself. The two do not collide; they sit at different points in the same day. Treating them as alternatives is a category mistake — they are complements, and both stand on real respect for what the other does.
